Why doesn't my speedometer/odometer work?

My haynes repair manual said nothing about the speedometer or speedometer cable. It's a 1995 mazda protege. My turn signals went out, and I replaced a fuse then the speedmeter went out. I don't see how these things could be related, but I'm just saying. Any input would be appreciated, thanks!
