How much will I get for vehicle totaled by a manufacturer recall?

I just took my car to a dealer to be inspected due to a recall notice, and the dealer found that the car was indeed affected by the recall and was not repairable (or at least they didn't want to pay for it). How am I going to be compensated? I bought this car new and babied it the whole time, I had no plans to get rid of it anytime time soon, and this defect has deprived me of years of potential use of the car. I don't think it is equitable for them to just give me standard blue book value (offering trade-in value would be an insult), as I couldn't come close to replacing the car for that amount.
