Sump pump won't run.?

My basement recently had minor flooding and it was due to the sump pump not running. We just recently had that sump pump put in about 2 years ago so i do not want to think that it is already broken. I have not fully inspected it yet, but my mom said that it does turn on but it won't pump water out. What can be wrong with it, that I can check that will save me from buying a whole new sump pump. Or am i Doomed?
